Japan tourism market diversifies as Chinese visitor numbers decline
Japan's tourism market is undergoing a structural shift as the number of Chinese visitors has dropped by approximately 50% compared to the previous year. Data from the Japan Tourism Agency and the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) shows a 50.2% decrease in Chinese visitors from January to March, followed by a 52.5% decrease from April to June.
Despite the decline in Chinese tourists, total inbound tourism spending has exceeded previous year levels. This is attributed to a diversification of the market, with increased visitor numbers from South Korea, Taiwan, and the United States filling the gap left by the decline in Chinese travelers.
Separately, July accommodation statistics released by the Japan Tourism Agency indicate that total overnight stays fell by 3.5% year-on-year to 54.67 million. This includes a 3.1% decrease in Japanese domestic travelers and a 4.6% decrease in foreign visitors. The overall room occupancy rate saw a slight decline of 0.4 percentage points to 60.8%.
