Japan tourism reaches record 42 million international visitors
Japan has experienced a significant tourism boom, with overseas visitors reaching a record 42 million in 2025. This represents more than a doubling of visitor numbers compared to 2015, when arrivals stood at nearly 20 million.
The Japanese government has set a target to attract 60 million international visitors by 2030. Factors contributing to the surge include a weak yen, which has increased affordability for travelers, alongside the country's cultural appeal, including its food, arts, and spiritual traditions such as Shinto and Buddhism.
In the 2025-26 period, Australians accounted for nearly one million trips to the country, totaling 992,550 visits.
