Japan financial systems: Pension benefits and tax deduction guidelines
Various Japanese financial and social security systems are detailed regarding eligibility and application processes.
The Pension Life Support Benefit provides an additional monthly amount to certain recipients of Old-age, Disability, or Survivors' Basic Pensions. For the 2026 fiscal year, the standard base amount is set at 5,620 yen per month, though actual amounts vary based on insurance premium payment and exemption periods. Recipients of the Survivors' Basic Pension are eligible based on their own income, whereas Old-age pension recipients must meet household-wide tax-exemption criteria.
Regarding tax systems, the Self-Medication Tax System allows for a deduction of over 12,000 yen spent on specific over-the-counter medicines, provided the individual undergoes certain health checkups. This is a selective option that cannot be used simultaneously with the standard Medical Expense Deduction. The latter applies when total annual medical expenses exceed 100,000 yen (or 5% of income for those earning under 2 million yen).
Additionally, for high earners, the threshold for being excluded from year-end tax adjustments is an annual salary exceeding 20 million yen. Those earning exactly 20 million yen remain eligible for the adjustment process.
