Japan updates pension thresholds and tax deductions for 2026
Japan is implementing several adjustments to its social security and tax systems affecting retirees and working seniors. For the 2026 fiscal year, the model pension amount for a couple receiving Employees' Pension is approximately 237,279 yen per month, while the National Pension full amount is 70,608 yen.
Key changes include an increase in the threshold for the ‘earnings-related pension suspension’ (Zaishoku Rourei Nenkin). Starting April 2026, the adjustment amount will rise from 510,000 yen to 650,000 yen per month, allowing seniors to earn more while working without having their pension benefits fully suspended. Additionally, the Pensioners Support Benefit will increase to 5,620 yen per month in 2026.
Regarding tax and household management, the income threshold for dependency deductions for parents aged 70 or older living with their children is set to rise from 480,000 yen to 580,000 yen, effective December 2025. For asset building, tax-exempt interest applies to housing and pension savings up to a principal of 5.5 million yen.
