Japan weather alert: Heavy rain and flooding risks in Kanto-Koshin and Tochigi

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued warnings for the Kanto-Koshin region and Tochigi Prefecture regarding the potential for heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides. Unstable atmospheric conditions, driven by warm, moist air and pressure troughs, are expected to cause intense rain accompanied by thunder from the afternoon of the 21st through the early hours of the 22nd.

In the Kanto-Koshin region, 24-hour rainfall is projected to reach up to 80 mm in northern, southern, and Koshin areas. Residents are advised to remain vigilant against rising river levels, inundation of low-lying land, and potential landslides.

In Tochigi Prefecture, similar warnings are in effect for flooding and landslides. Hourly rainfall in both northern and southern parts of the prefecture is expected to reach 40 mm in some areas, with a total 24-hour accumulation of up to 80 mm. Authorities have also cautioned against lightning, sudden gusts of wind, and hail, which may impact agricultural crops and facilities.
