Japanese Defense Minister Koizumi visits Indonesia, pledges maritime security cooperation

Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi met Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the president’s residence in Jakarta on 12‑13 June 2026. The meeting was attended by Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Foreign Minister Sugiono and several other officials.

Koizumi presented a miniature model of the warship Mikasa as a souvenir and highlighted Indonesia’s strategic maritime points, saying, "Indonesia has several vital strategic points such as the Strait of Malacca and the Lombok Strait." He stressed that ensuring maritime security and protecting sea‑lane communications are issues of shared importance for Japan and Indonesia. Koizumi arrived at Soekarno‑Hatta Airport, was received by Sjafrie, and returned to Tokyo after the brief visit.
