Japanese delegation visits Sarnath to honor UNESCO heritage status

A 75-member Japanese delegation, led by Kotaro Nagasaki, Governor of Yamanashi Prefecture, visited Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh, India. The visit follows Sarnath’s recent designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Delegates explored significant historical and spiritual landmarks, including the Dhamek and Chaukhandi Stupas, which are associated with Lord Buddha’s first sermon. Participants described the visit as a testament to the long-standing spiritual and cultural ties between India and Japan.

Uttar Pradesh Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh noted that Sarnath’s UNESCO status has enhanced the region's Buddhist tourism profile on a global scale. The visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral cultural connections and encourage increased tourism from Japan to the Buddhist circuit in Uttar Pradesh.
