Japanese fish markets host regional seafood and tourism events
Various regional fish markets in Japan are hosting special events to promote local seafood and boost economic activity.
In Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, the Mitsu Morning Market ‘Shun, Sen, Mi Matsuri’ is scheduled for October 24. The event aims to promote the deliciousness of fish from the Seto Inland Sea. Activities include touch pools for children, fish scooping, and opportunities for citizens to purchase fresh seafood directly from wholesalers. The event typically attracts approximately 3,000 visitors.
In Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, the Omicho Market held a one-night ‘Omicho Night Market’ as part of a pilot project to promote the ‘nighttime economy.’ Selected shops extended their hours until 8:30 PM, offering grilled seafood, sashimi, and local sake. Visitors praised the event for providing a more relaxed atmosphere compared to the daytime crowds, and market organizers are looking to evaluate the results for potential future implementation.
