Regional food festivals in Japan
Overview
Various regional food events and festivals continue to be held across Japan to celebrate local specialties and culinary traditions.
Following early September activities such as the ‘2nd Ogura Toast Stamp Rally’ in Aichi and bread-focused events in Osaka, the scope of exhibitions has expanded. Recent and upcoming events include the ‘Zen-Nihon Umai-mono Taikai’ in Fukuoka, Hokkaido-themed gourmet exhibitions in Osaka, and the ‘Tokyo Shokushijo Matsuri 2026’ highlighting Kumamoto beef.
Newer schedules for late September and October 2026 show a continued emphasis on regional fairs. In Ikebukuro, Sunshine City will host the ‘Hokkaido Marugoto Fair’ from October 8 to 12, 2026, featuring approximately 65 vendors selling seafood, mountain produce, sweets, and sake. The ‘Setouchi Fair’ is scheduled at EXPASA Ebina on the Tomei Expressway from October 2 to November 9, 2026, showcasing over 200 products from eight prefectures. Other highlights include the ‘Chikugo SAKE Festa 2026’ in Kurume City on October 10–11 and the ‘Yatsugatake Nanko Fair 2026’ in Tama City on October 3.
Recent activity has also focused on regional fish markets. In Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, the Omicho Market conducted a pilot ‘Omicho Night Market’ to promote the ‘nighttime economy,’ with shops extending hours to offer grilled seafood and sake. In Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, the Mitsu Morning Market is scheduled to host the ‘Shun, Sen, Mi Matsuri’ on October 24, an event designed to promote Seto Inland Sea seafood through activities like fish scooping and direct sales from wholesalers.
