Japanese municipalities launch community and career support programs
Local governments in Japan are launching specialized training programs to support community reintegration and career development.
In Omuta City, the Social Welfare Council is organizing a supporter training course for the 2026 fiscal year. Aimed at citizens interested in assisting those experiencing school refusal or social withdrawal (hikikomori), the three-part program includes lectures on supporting individuals and their families, understanding current social trends, and handling personal information. The course is free and aims to foster a community where people can find reliable understanding.
In Handa City, the Board of Education will launch a digital talent training course for women in September 2026. Designed for residents who have had career breaks due to marriage or childbirth, the seven-day program combines digital skill acquisition with personal development. The curriculum includes using generative AI to translate childcare experience into professional strengths, professional makeup lessons, and career counseling to build confidence for re-entering the workforce.
