Japanese municipalities launch dementia awareness initiatives

Municipalities in Japan are launching various initiatives to observe dementia awareness month and World Alzheimer's Day on September 21. These programs aim to foster community environments where individuals with dementia can live with security and dignity.

In Hakodate, activities include a panel exhibition at the city hall to promote a ‘new view of dementia,’ book introductions at the central library, and a free screening of the film ‘Father and My Unending Song’ at the library. The city also plans to hold a dementia supporter training course in October, specifically targeting high school students and older to deepen understanding among younger generations.

Kinokawa City is participating in nationwide efforts to plant orange-colored flowers, such as marigolds, to symbolize dementia awareness. The city is also organizing film screenings, health measurement sessions, and training courses for dementia supporters to help build a supportive local network.
