Japan Prime Minister Takaichi faces scrutiny over G7 absence

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is facing intense criticism from opposition parties and media following her absence from a G7 online summit held on October 2. The controversy stems from conflicting explanations provided by government officials regarding why the Prime Minister did not attend.

During parliamentary sessions, Takaichi stated that the absence was due to a lack of prepared large-scale displays for international conferences. However, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi offered a different explanation, citing the limited duration of the meeting, the specific focus on European diesel prices, and the short notice of the summit. This discrepancy led members of the Constitutional Democratic Party to question the consistency of the government's narrative.

Further scrutiny has emerged regarding reports that Takaichi was attending a private dinner with Liberal Democratic Party officials at the Prime Minister's official residence shortly before the summit began. Critics have raised concerns about the potential mixing of public and private duties, as well as whether the summit was bypassed in favor of social engagements. While the Foreign Ministry maintained that sending a deputy was an appropriate decision, opposition lawmakers continue to demand accountability for the Prime Minister's absence.
