Japan-U.S. diplomatic engagement at the United Nations

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi engaged in high-level diplomatic activities at the United Nations in New York, focusing on strengthening the U.S.-Japan alliance and promoting a rule-of-law-based international order.

Following a 35-minute bilateral meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, where leaders discussed the Japan-U.S. alliance and the International Criminal Court (ICC), Takaichi addressed the UN General Assembly. She reaffirmed Japan's support for the ICC as a cornerstone of the rule of law.

In her address, Takaichi emphasized the ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific’ (FOIP) framework, structured around three pillars: strengthening energy and critical material supply chains, enhancing cooperation for peace and stability, and maintaining an international order based on the rule of law. To address energy security amid Middle East tensions, she announced a comprehensive cooperation plan to support the economic and energy resilience of Gulf nations.

Regarding emerging technologies, Takaichi proposed an international summit in Japan based on the ‘Hiroshima AI Process.’ Her agenda also included calls for UN Security Council reform, advocacy for a nuclear-free world, and expressions of concern regarding nuclear and missile technology proliferation involving Russia and North Korea.
