Japanese railway updates: Tokyu 3000 series renewal and JR East crew training

Recent railway developments in Japan include the return to service of the Tokyu 3000 series 3107F following a renewal process. After completing a paint change and undergoing test runs from the Motosumiyoshi depot on September 14, the train has resumed regular operations.

In a separate development, JR East is conducting crew training using the E657 series K4 formation in the Maebashi area on the Joetsu Line. This training is believed to be preparation for the upcoming “Luna Azure” service, a new overnight express scheduled to begin operations in early fiscal year 2027. The Luna Azure is expected to run between Shinagawa and Aomori via the Joetsu and Uetsu lines during spring and autumn, with daytime services between Shinagawa and Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi during the winter. This follows a series of similar training exercises conducted in the Akita, Aomori, and Niigata regions since July.
