Japanese railway fleet and service updates

Overview

Japanese railway operators are implementing various fleet modernization and service preparation initiatives.

Toei Subway has commenced the delivery of the 12-600 series 12-971F train set for the Oedo Line. Meanwhile, Keikyu Corporation is planning a significant update for 2026, manufacturing 24 new 1000 series cars in modular configurations to allow for more flexible operations, which may lead to the phase-out of the existing 1500 series fixed 6-car formations.

In other developments, the Tokyu 3000 series 3107F has returned to regular service following a renewal process and paint change. Additionally, JR East is conducting crew training with the E657 series in the Maebashi area. This training is intended to prepare for the “Luna Azure” overnight express service, which is scheduled to begin operations in early fiscal year 2027.
