Japanese scientists create female clones from male mice using CRISPR

Researchers in Japan have successfully used a CRISPR-based technique to transform male mouse embryos into females. The study, conducted by scientists from the University of Yamanashi and the Riken BioResource Research Center, utilizes a method called ‘Y-CUT’ to eliminate the Y chromosome from male cells.

By removing the Y chromosome, the researchers produced animals with an XO chromosomal configuration. These female clones grew normally and demonstrated the ability to reproduce, which is a critical factor for the potential application of this technology.

The breakthrough offers significant implications for conservation efforts, particularly in scenarios where only males of an endangered species remain. While the technique shows promise for preserving biodiversity, researchers noted that there are still important limitations regarding its application to other mammals.
