Japanese CRISPR research on female mouse cloning

Overview

Researchers from the University of Yamanashi and the RIKEN BioResource Research Center have developed a CRISPR-based technique to create female mouse clones from male embryos. The method, referred to as ‘Y-CUT’, targets the Y chromosome to prevent its transmission during cell division, resulting in female mice with an XO chromosomal configuration.

The study indicates that these female mice are healthy, genetically identical to the male donor (minus the Y chromosome), and capable of reproduction. While the research is currently a preprint and has not undergone formal peer review, scientists suggest the technology could significantly aid wildlife conservation by allowing for the production of females from limited populations of endangered males.
