Japanese scientists use CRISPR to create female mouse clones

Researchers from the University of Yamanashi and the RIKEN BioResource Research Center have successfully used CRISPR gene-editing technology to create female mouse clones from male embryos. By utilizing a method dubbed ‘Y CUT’, the team targeted a specific region of the Y chromosome to prevent its transmission during cell division, effectively removing it from the developing organism.

The resulting female mice possess a single X chromosome, a condition known as XO. In mice, this does not compromise health or fertility. The researchers demonstrated that these females are genetically identical to the original male donor, except for the absence of the Y chromosome. The treated embryos were successfully carried by surrogate mothers, resulting in healthy, reproductive offspring.

While the study is currently a preprint and has not yet undergone formal peer review, the scientists suggest the technique could have significant implications for wildlife conservation. It offers a potential method to restore populations of endangered species by producing females from a limited number of preserved males.
