Japanese fireworks festivals face funding crisis amid rising costs

Traditional Japanese summer fireworks festivals are facing significant financial challenges due to rising costs for materials, labor, and security. In many municipalities, these rising expenses have led to the cancellation or downsizing of long-standing events.

In Yonago City, the 53rd Gaina Festival successfully held its fireworks display after facing potential cancellation due to a lack of operating funds. Public demand and increased corporate donations allowed the event to expand to 8,000 fireworks. Similarly, the Shinshiro Noryo Fireworks Festival in Aichi Prefecture is navigating rising costs, with the price of individual fireworks increasing significantly over the last four years.

To combat these shortages, new support models are emerging. Some regions are utilizing crowdfunding to engage local residents as active supporters rather than just spectators. Additionally, corporate initiatives, such as Kirin Beer’s “Harekaze ACTION,” are providing financial aid to hundreds of municipalities to help preserve cultural traditions like fireworks and cherry blossom viewing.
