Japan's handheld fireworks industry faces production and space shortages
The traditional culture of handheld fireworks in Japan is facing a crisis due to rising gunpowder costs, a shortage of domestic manufacturers, and strict local regulations. Many domestic producers are closing down due to an aging workforce, leaving the market heavily reliant on imports. Specific traditional varieties, such as certain types of sparklers, are at risk of disappearing entirely.
In addition to production issues, a lack of designated spaces for use has led to declining sales. While many urban parks and beaches prohibit fireworks, some municipalities are launching pilot programs to preserve the tradition. For example, Nagaokakyo City has begun testing the use of approximately 290 parks for handheld fireworks under specific safety rules, and Banpaku Memorial Park offers weekend events.
Safety and proper disposal remain critical. Experts advise that unused or used fireworks should be soaked in water to ensure all gunpowder is neutralized before being disposed of as combustible waste, following local municipal guidelines. For complex types like rocket fireworks, professional disposal services may be required.
