Japan's northern Honshu struck by magnitude 6.9 earthquake, no tsunami warning

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake occurred offshore of Iwate Prefecture in northern Honshu at 07:30 local time on 25 May, with a focal depth of about 50 km. Strong shaking was recorded across Aomori, Iwate and Miyagi prefectures, reaching intensity 6‑strong, and was felt in high‑rise buildings in Tokyo. The Japan Meteorological Agency said there was no risk of a tsunami.

The quake prompted the suspension of Shinkansen services on the Tohoku line between Sendai and Shin‑Aomori, and the Japanese government activated a crisis‑management center at the Prime Minister’s residence to coordinate response and information dissemination.
