Japan's Prime Minister proposes energy‑security initiatives at G7 summit

Japan’s Prime Minister Sane Takahashi travelled to France and then to the United Kingdom and Italy before heading to the G7 summit in Italy, marking her first participation in the meeting. During press briefings she said she will discuss geopolitical situations in East Asia, the Middle East and Ukraine, and will seek deeper bilateral cooperation on advanced technologies such as AI, quantum computing, space, semiconductors and offshore wind.

At the summit Japan will put forward three proposals on energy security: opposition to unjust export bans and coordinated action among G7 members, strengthening oil stockpiles for Asian regions and boosting cooperation with the International Energy Agency, and enhancing collaboration between oil‑producing and oil‑consuming nations. Takahashi also announced a plan for a joint stock‑piling framework for critical minerals, offering to help G7 countries build linked storage systems. She wrote on X, “This will be my first G7 summit, and I look forward to open discussions with all leaders on these vital issues.”
