Japan's Tohoku Region Hit by 6.9 Magnitude Earthquake

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the northeastern coast of Japan on the morning of the 25th, with the epicenter located offshore Iwate Prefecture at a depth of about 50 km. The Japan Meteorological Agency said no tsunami warning was issued and only minor sea‑level changes were expected.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities, and nuclear power plants showed no abnormal conditions, according to officials. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara told reporters that the government has set up an emergency response team to gather information and prepare disaster‑relief measures. The agency noted that Japan experiences a significant share of the world’s large earthquakes, recalling the 2011 magnitude‑9.0 Tohoku quake and its devastating tsunami.
