Jared Kushner leads Gaza peace negotiations and disarmament talks

U.S. special envoy Jared Kushner is conducting high-level diplomacy in the Middle East to advance a Gaza peace plan. Following meetings with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya in El-Alamein, Kushner met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

To facilitate the plan, two joint working groups have been established. The first is tasked with the complete disarmament and demilitarization of Gaza, including the decommissioning of weapons and the dismantling of tunnel networks. Kushner estimated that weapon removal and tunnel filling could begin within 60 to 90 days. The second group will focus on humanitarian needs such as sanitation, clean water, and health.

However, tensions arose during the meeting with Netanyahu regarding Israel's military operations. Netanyahu expressed a refusal to commit to ending strikes against Hamas terrorists, while Kushner cautioned against broad interpretations of exceptions for 'imminent threats.' This diplomatic effort occurs as a 60-day negotiation window between the U.S. and Iran is also expiring, amid a stalemate over Iran's nuclear program.
