Jarosław Abbey attack: Ukrainian national charged with murder

A 31-year-old Ukrainian national, Ihor M., is facing charges of murder, attempted murder, and causing serious bodily harm following a knife attack at a Benedictine Abbey in Jarosław, Poland. The attack resulted in the death of 67-year-old priest Stanisław Zbojnowicz and left two other individuals in intensive care.

Authorities in Przemyśl have taken over the investigation due to the complexity of the case. Ihor M. is currently held in a strictly guarded medical facility. Medical assessments indicate the suspect is in a psychotic state, characterized by extreme psychomotor agitation and fragmented thinking, making him unable to participate in legal proceedings until he receives antipsychotic treatment.

According to the Ukrainian Ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Bodnar, the suspect had been residing in Germany since 2022 and was traveling from Germany toward Ukraine. He was reportedly turned back at the Korczowa/Krakowez border crossing due to a lack of vehicle insurance, after which his car was towed to Jarosław. The Ambassador clarified that the suspect is not a member of the military.
