Jarosław abbey attack and security response

Overview

On September 24, 2026, a fatal knife attack occurred at the Benedictine Sisters’ abbey in Jarosław, Poland. A 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen, Ihor M., stabbed five people, including three clergy members and two laypeople. The attacker used a knife taken from the abbey's kitchen. Father Stanisław Zbojnowicz died from his injuries, while others, including Father Adrian Mantykiewicz and Father Marek Pieńkowski, were wounded.

Authorities in Przemyśl have taken over the investigation. Ihor M. faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and causing grievous bodily harm. Following psychiatric evaluations describing “acute multifaceted psychotic disorders” and extreme psychomotor agitation, the suspect was ordered to detention in a high-security psychiatric hospital. Medical assessments suggest he is currently unable to participate in legal proceedings until receiving antipsychotic treatment.

Ukrainian Ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Bodnar, clarified that the suspect had been residing in Germany since 2022 and was traveling toward Ukraine. He was previously detained at the Korczowa border crossing due to invalid vehicle insurance. The Ambassador also noted the suspect is not a member of the military.

Regarding the victims, Father Marek Pieńkowski has shown signs of improvement; the abbey reported he has been disconnected from a respirator, has begun communicating with short sentences, and has received Holy Communion. In response to the attack, Podkarpackie Voivode Teresa Kubas-Hul deployed additional officers to increase patrols near schools and hostels. The abbey has since reopened. During a memorial Mass, Father Adrian Mantykiewicz called for forgiveness, urging the public, “Please do not blame the nation from which the perpetrator came, because a specific person committed the evil.”
