Jarosław Kaczyński joins protests at Poland's Constitutional Tribunal
Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the Law and Justice (PiS) party, joined protesters outside the Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw to oppose the current government. The demonstration involved PiS politicians, activists from the Border Defense Movement, and supporters of Gazeta Polska and Telewizja Republika.
The unrest follows the swearing-in of Maciej Berek, a former government legislation chief, as a judge of the Constitutional Tribunal. Due to disputes regarding his appointment and a lack of invitation from the President, Berek took his oath before the Marshal of the Sejm rather than in the Presidential Palace. During the proceedings at the Tribunal, activists blocked entrances, leading to physical altercations and scuffles.
During the protest, Kaczyński criticized the ruling administration, labeling them a ‘grim gang’ and accusing them of using deceptive promises to maintain power. He stated that the current government’s methods would go down in the ‘black history of democracy’ and emphasized the need to protect institutions like the Constitutional Tribunal and the National Bank from government control.
