Polish political opposition led by Jarosław Kaczyński
Overview
Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the Law and Justice (PiS) party, has engaged in various forms of political opposition and protest against the current Polish government.
Kaczyński has focused significant opposition efforts on the Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw. He has joined protesters to oppose government plans to seat new judges elected by the Sejm. This dispute involves the validity of judicial oaths; while some judges were sworn in by President Karol Nawrocki, others performed the ceremony in the Sejm, a move not recognized by Tribunal President Bogdan Święczkowski. Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek has announced an “odbudowa” (reconstruction) of the Tribunal within weeks to ensure all Sejm-elected judges can preside.
Recent unrest intensified following the swearing-in of Maciej Berek, a former government legislation chief, as a judge. Due to disputes regarding his appointment and a lack of invitation from the President, Berek took his oath before the Marshal of the Sejm. During proceedings at the Tribunal, activists—including PiS politicians and members of the Border Defense Movement—blocked entrances, resulting in physical altercations and scuffles.
During these protests, Kaczyński criticized the administration, labeling them a ‘grim gang’ and accusing them of using deceptive promises to maintain power. He stated that the government’s methods would go down in the ‘black history of democracy’ and emphasized the need to protect institutions like the Constitutional Tribunal and the National Bank from government control.
Additionally, Kaczyński has organized conferences in Kielce to oppose the potential reduction of EU funds for the Świętokrzyskie region. In related party developments, PiS announced that Daniel Obajtek will play a significant role in preparing the party's economic program, a position previously held by Mateusz Morawiecki.
