Jarosław Kaczyński testifies in two‑tower development probe

Polish leader Jarosław Kaczyński appeared before prosecutors on Wednesday to give testimony in a long‑running investigation into the planned construction of two skyscrapers in Warsaw. The project, proposed by the Srebrna development company with ties to the Law and Justice (PiS) party, was never completed, but the inquiry focuses on how the venture was prepared, its financial arrangements, and the role of Austrian entrepreneur Gerald Birgfellner.

Lawmakers have raised concerns about possible irregularities, including a reported cash envelope of 50,000 zł and the nature of Kaczyński’s interactions with the prosecutor general during the scandal. Foreign minister Radosław Sikorski called the case “reeking for a kilometre” and demanded full clarification. The probe examines the overlap of political power and business interests, questioning whether Kaczyński, who has long presented himself as a moral arbiter, adhered to the transparency standards he promoted.

The investigation adds pressure on the ruling party as the former premier faces scrutiny over alleged conflicts of interest and the broader integrity of state institutions.
