Jarosław Abbey attack: Ukrainian man kills priest and injures four others

On September 24, 2026, a 31-year-old Ukrainian man, identified as Ihor M., attacked several people with a knife at the Benedictine sisters' abbey in Jarosław, Poland. The attack resulted in the death of Father Stanisław Zbojnowicz and left four others injured, including Father Marek Pienkowski, who remains in serious condition.

Psychiatric experts have determined that the suspect suffers from acute psychotic disorders, rendering him unfit to stand trial. He is currently held under a three-month temporary arrest in a hospital setting. Investigations indicate the suspect had traveled from Germany to Poland with the intention of returning to Ukraine but was detained at the Korczowa border crossing due to invalid vehicle insurance.

In the aftermath, Father Adrian Mantykiewicz, who was also wounded in the attack, delivered a homily urging the community to respond with forgiveness rather than hatred. He specifically appealed to the public not to blame the Ukrainian people for the actions of a single individual. The Jan Karski Society has since awarded Father Mantykiewicz and Father Pienkowski the Jan Karski Mission Medal in recognition of their conduct. The incident has raised concerns regarding rising anti-Ukrainian sentiment in the region.
