A 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen, identified as Ihor M., has been charged with murder, attempted murder, and causing grievous bodily harm following a knife attack at the Benedictine Abbey in Jarosław, Poland. The incident occurred on the morning of September 24, 2026, at a retreat center within the 17th-century abbey complex.

During the attack, which reportedly began in a café area, the suspect used a knife taken from the monastery kitchen to stab five people: three members of the clergy and two laypeople (one man and one woman). One priest, Father Stanisław Zbojnowicz, died from his injuries. The other four victims were hospitalized; while some were initially in critical condition, their status has since been reported as stable.

Investigators revealed that the suspect arrived in Poland from Germany overnight and had attempted to cross into Ukraine via the Korczowa border crossing. However, he was unable to enter Ukraine because his vehicle lacked valid insurance. The motive for the attack remains unknown.

Ihor M. is currently being held in a psychiatric medical facility as he exhibits severe psychotic symptoms, including agitation and a lack of logical contact. Prosecutors are seeking a three-month detention order to be served in a hospital setting. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have both condemned the act.
