Jaru and Jaraguá do Sul Boost Fire and Flood Prevention Measures

The municipality of Jaru in Brazil has launched a new phase of its urban fire‑prevention program. Teams from the municipal agriculture and environment secretariat and civil defense visited residents in several neighborhoods, distributing informational leaflets and advising on how to avoid fires during the dry season. Mayor‑appointed environment secretary Cleverson Barbosa said the effort targets the neighborhoods with the highest incidence of fires and will expand to additional districts in the coming weeks.

In the southern state of Santa Catarina, the city of Jaraguá do Sul is carrying out extensive flood‑mitigation work. Municipal public works crews have been cleaning and desilting more than 20 km of streams each week, clearing culverts, installing new drainage tubes, and repairing bridges and walkways. Mayor Jair Franzner declared a state of emergency to accelerate these actions, stating that they aim to reduce flood risk, protect infrastructure and enhance public safety ahead of expected heavy rains.

Both municipalities emphasize that proactive maintenance and community education are essential to safeguard health, property and the environment during the hot, rainy season.
