Jason Arday, former Cambridge professor, found dead in London

Jason Arday, the former University of Cambridge professor of sociology of education, has been found dead at an address in Battersea, south London. Arday, 41, was found unresponsive on Friday afternoon and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Metropolitan Police stated that his death is being treated as unexpected and is not considered suspicious.

Arday, who was the youngest Black professor at Cambridge upon his appointment in 2023, had resigned from his position on August 5, 2024. His resignation followed high-profile allegations of plagiarism regarding his doctoral thesis and questions concerning his academic credentials and biography. While Arday denied plagiarism, he acknowledged making errors in his work, attributing some discrepancies to his autism. A previous review by Liverpool John Moores University had not found evidence of plagiarism in his research.

His death has sparked significant debate regarding media scrutiny and the treatment of academics. London Mayor Sadiq Khan described Arday as a victim of “unacceptable public hounding and a campaign of abuse,” while his family stated he had been subjected to a “campaign of misinformation.” Tributes have been paid by University of Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Deborah Prentice and Education Secretary Lucy Powell.
