Java North Coast protection program to combine sea wall and mangroves

The Indonesian government is preparing to launch a coastal protection program for the northern coast of Java (Pantura) using a hybrid approach that combines hard infrastructure with nature-based solutions. Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono announced that the groundbreaking for this initiative will take place in Timbulsloko Village, Sayung District, Demak Regency, in Central Java.

The project, managed by the North Coast Management Authority (BOPPJ), aims to integrate the construction of a Giant Sea Wall with extensive mangrove planting efforts. This nature-based component is intended to provide ecological protection and support local economic development. The Central Java Provincial Government is aligning these efforts with its existing 'Mageri Segoro' program to combat coastal challenges such as abrasion, erosion, flooding, and land subsidence.
