Java north coast sea wall and protection project

Overview

The Indonesian government has officially launched a coastal protection program for the northern coast of Java (Pantura) to combat abrasion, rising sea levels, and land subsidence. Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono initiated the program in Timbulsloko, Demak, marking a transition toward active implementation.

The initiative utilizes a hybrid approach, combining physical infrastructure like the Giant Sea Wall with nature-based solutions. In Central Java, the program integrates the provincial ‘Mageri Segoro’ initiative to address coastal challenges across its 651-kilometer coastline. To facilitate mangrove restoration, the project employs HexBricks—a modular structure developed by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN)—alongside bamboo structures to stabilize the environment and promote growth.

The Pantura region is considered economically vital, contributing approximately 28 percent to Indonesia’s national GDP through logistics corridors, food centers, and industrial and special economic zones. The protection efforts are designed to span coastal areas from Banten and Jakarta through West Java, Central Java, and East Java.
