KM Virgo Transport 8: Search continues for 126 missing in Java Sea
Search and rescue operations continue in the Java Sea following the capsizing of the KM Virgo Transport 8. The vessel, which was traveling from Surabaya to Banjarmasin, encountered heavy seas and lost contact on September 13, 2026.
As of the latest updates, the death toll has reached 10, while 108 passengers and crew members have been rescued. Out of the 243 people listed on the manifest, 126 individuals remain missing. Basarnas has extended the search operation for an additional seven days to locate the remaining victims.
Divers from the Basarnas Special Group and the Indonesian Navy have been conducting underwater searches, sometimes utilizing Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) technology to map the interior of the wreckage. Challenges such as strong currents, high waves, and unpredictable weather have frequently hindered recovery efforts. To improve efficiency, authorities are planning to right the vessel and tow it to shallower waters to facilitate safer body recovery.
The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation is overseeing the salvage operation and ensuring that victims' families receive appropriate compensation. For instance, the heirs of one deceased victim have already received 70 million IDR in total insurance payments from PT Jasa Raharja and PT Jasa Raharja Putera.
