KMP Virgo Transport 8: Search extended for 126 missing in Java Sea

Search and rescue operations for the KMP Virgo Transport 8, which capsized in the Java Sea, have been extended by seven days. As of the seventh day of the operation, 117 victims have been accounted for, including 108 survivors and nine deceased. However, 126 people from the original manifest of 243 remain missing.

Authorities are preparing to right the vessel to facilitate further recovery efforts. Specialist divers, including a team of 12 expert divers from Basarnas, have been deployed to search inside the ship's hull. The Ministry of Transportation has also deployed state vessels, including KN Kunyit, KN Grantin P. 21, and KN Miang Besar, to support navigation and search activities.

Regarding victim compensation, the government has confirmed that families of the deceased are entitled to up to 70 million IDR, consisting of 50 million IDR from PT Jasa Raharja and 20 million IDR from PT Asuransi Jasaraharja Putera. While some heirs have already received payments, others are still pending due to missing next-of-kin.
