Javier Milei criticizes UN and asserts Malvinas sovereignty

Argentine President Javier Milei delivered a forceful speech at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, where he characterized the UN as a 'useless organization' that supports 'arrogant parasites' masquerading as bureaucrats.

Milei used the international forum to assert Argentina's sovereignty over the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands, accusing the UN of ignoring the dispute and rejecting the principle of self-determination for the islanders. He also warned of sanctions against companies involved in illegal hydrocarbon exploitation in the contested zone.

On technology, Milei declared that the Argentine state will not regulate Artificial Intelligence, instead promising tax benefits to encourage innovation. He further emphasized Argentina's geopolitical alignment with the United States and Israel.

Domestically, the speech stands in contrast to recent economic data from INDEC, which reported an increase in poverty during the first half of 2026 and a decline in economic activity in July, despite Milei's claims of lifting 14 million people out of poverty since late 2023.
