Javier Milei faces ongoing tension with Argentine unions

The administration of Javier Milei has faced sustained tension with the Confederación General del Trabajo (CGT) throughout his first 1,000 days in office. The relationship has been defined by frequent industrial actions, including 84 hours of general strikes, and legal challenges against government reforms.

Key points of contention include labor reforms, wage adjustments, pension policies, and the defense of public services. While the CGT successfully used judicial means to halt certain aspects of Decree 70/23 and restrictions on the right to strike, it was unable to prevent the passage of the Ley Bases, the Fiscal Package, and new labor reforms.

Additionally, the administration's rhetoric regarding the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) dispute has drawn comparisons to previous historical periods. President Milei has expressed views aligned with the British position, suggesting that the islanders should be allowed to “vote with their feet,” a stance that contradicts Argentina's long-standing diplomatic position regarding the population's status.
