Argentina country risk index hits yearly high of 650 points

Argentina's country risk index has reached its highest level of the year, surpassing 650 basis points. This increase follows a period of volatility in sovereign bonds and reflects growing investor uncertainty regarding the nation's economic trajectory and the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.

Minister of Economy Luis Caputo attributed the rise to a combination of international shocks and domestic fears. He noted that approximately half of the increase stems from global variables, while the remainder is driven by market anxiety about a potential return to previous economic models. Caputo also ruled out currency devaluation as a tool for competitiveness, instead focusing on structural reforms.

President Javier Milei has responded to the escalation by asserting that the risk index will “collapse” if he secures re-election, projecting that such a political continuity could accelerate per capita economic growth to levels of 7% or 8%. Meanwhile, political figures like Chief of Staff Diego Santilli have urged business leaders to support the current administration to avoid the perceived risks of opposition leadership.
