Javier Milei defends economic policy amid debate over rising consumer debt

During an event at the Bolsa de Comercio de Rosario, President Javier Milei defended his economic management and addressed rising consumer credit delinquency. Milei attributed part of the delinquency to the ‘World Cup effect,’ suggesting some consumers purchased televisions on credit to watch the tournament and subsequently failed to complete payments. He also noted that banking delinquency rates remain slightly below 12% and claimed the country has seen 27 consecutive months of growth. Milei rejected calls for state intervention to assist debtors, arguing that the market should resolve these issues between private parties.

In contrast, Salvador Femenía, spokesperson for the Confederation of Argentine Medium Enterprises (CAME), disputed the government’s diagnosis. Femenía argued that rising household debt is not driven by luxury or entertainment purchases, but by a loss of purchasing power that forces families to finance essential goods such as food and medicine. CAME warned of a widespread recession affecting the real economy, noting that high logistics costs and tax pressures are straining small businesses and contributing to a decline in domestic consumption.
