Argentina's Economy Minister Luis Caputo Defends Central Bank Reform
Economy Minister Luis Caputo repeatedly told investors that the government never promised to solve Argentina’s economy in two years and defended the proposed reform of the Central Bank’s charter. He described the change as a “blow to inflation” that will prohibit the Bank from financing the Treasury and set its primary mission to preserve the value of the peso. President Javier Milei has sent the reform bill to Congress as part of a broader package that also includes tax, labour and public‑spending reforms. Economist Osvaldo Giordano said that successful implementation will require an agreement between the nation and the provinces, stressing that the Central Bank reform cannot succeed in isolation. The government also plans to adopt a fiscal “grillete” law to enforce a fiscal brake alongside the monetary changes. Together, the measures aim to stabilize macro‑economic conditions and support the administration’s outlook for the 2027 elections.
