JCB advances hydrogen-powered agricultural and earthmoving machinery
British equipment manufacturer JCB is expanding its hydrogen-powered machinery lineup as an alternative to diesel. In May, the company released its first hydrogen-fuelled backhoe loader and a 60kVA generator. JCB also plans to introduce a commercial line of Loadall telescopic handlers powered by hydrogen and expects to develop a hydrogen tractor by the early 2030s.
To demonstrate the capabilities of its Hydromax engine, JCB set a world land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. A twin-engine, four-wheel-drive vehicle driven by retired British pilot Andy Green averaged nearly 654 kilometres per hour, making it the fastest hydrogen internal combustion vehicle on earth. Over the past six years, the company has developed more than 200 variations of its hydrogen engine technology.
