JCB Teams with Circle to Pilot Stablecoin Payments for Cross‑Border and Retail Transactions

Tokyo‑based payment network JCB announced a memorandum of understanding with Circle Internet Group to explore the use of stablecoins, chiefly USDC, in both cross‑border treasury operations and in‑store merchant payments in Japan. The partnership will begin with a proof‑of‑concept for JCB’s internal fund transfers, aiming to improve payment efficiency, lower remittance costs and speed settlement for international transactions.

The companies will also assess stablecoin‑enabled checkout experiences for Japanese merchants serving foreign visitors, evaluating interoperability across multiple blockchain networks. The initiative builds on JCB’s earlier collaborations with Digital Garage and Resona Holdings that began in January 2026 to test stablecoin acceptance at physical retail locations.

Circle will provide its suite of blockchain infrastructure—including USDC, EURC, Gateway and Arc—while JCB contributes its global merchant network, seeking to create new payment experiences and reduce currency‑exchange friction for inbound tourists.
