JD Vance Leads US-Iran Peace Talks in Switzerland

U.S. Vice President JD Vance headed a delegation in Switzerland to negotiate peace with Iran, with mediation by Pakistan and Qatar. Vance told reporters that "progress is being made" despite a weekend of heightened tensions, including Iranian threats to walk out after provocative tweets from President Donald Trump.

Trump asserted that Iran had temporarily closed the Strait of Hormuz and warned the country against supporting its regional proxies, proposing possible tolls on the strait after a 60‑day cease‑fire. Vance countered that the strait remains open and sought to defuse the tension.

The talks also addressed nuclear oversight, with Iran agreeing to allow International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors back onto key sites. A framework for potentially unfreezing Iranian assets was discussed, suggesting that any released funds would be overseen by the United States and Qatar and directed toward Iranian humanitarian needs, including purchases of U.S. agricultural products.

Separately, the U.S. Treasury issued a 60‑day general license authorizing the sale of Iranian oil, and a recent memorandum of understanding lifted the naval blockade on Iranian ports. The conflict has been estimated to cost U.S. taxpayers over $130 billion, largely through higher consumer prices.
