Jean-Luc Melenchon presents political programme amid French protests

Jean-Luc Melenchon, leader of the France Unbowed (LFI) party, has released his political programme ahead of a rally in Le Bourget. Melenchon has emerged as a primary leftist contender for next year’s presidential election, potentially challenging National Rally leader Marine Le Pen.

His proposed platform includes lowering the retirement age to 60, raising the minimum wage to 1,700 euro ($1,900) per month, and renationalising parts of the economy. He also advocates for France to withdraw from NATO and seeks to transform national debt into a permanent interest-free loan through the European Central Bank.

While Melenchon intends for France to remain in the European Union, he proposes refusing EU rules that conflict with national social, environmental, or economic programmes. His political momentum coincides with nationwide protests involving students and various groups protesting rising living costs and public service failures.
