Jean-Luc Mélenchon proposes radical socialist economic plan for 2027 French presidency
In interviews and a campaign meeting, French presidential candidate Jean‑Luc Mélenchon outlined a program that would replace market‑driven pricing with state‑set prices for essential goods, nationalise agriculture and other sectors, and re‑introduce a wealth tax. His plan calls for a steep tax scale reaching up to 90 % on top incomes, a revival of the French wealth tax, higher inheritance taxes and a large increase in public borrowing, including a proposal to convert existing debt into perpetual zero‑interest bonds. Mélenchon links these measures to health concerns, arguing that current agricultural practices and pollutants are driving rises in cancer, diabetes and infertility, and that a “govern by needs” model would protect public health.
The proposals target fundamental changes to France’s fiscal and economic system, emphasizing extensive state intervention, price caps on energy and food, and a restructuring of public finance to support the envisaged transformation.
