Jean-Luc Mélenchon proposes ‘social emergency’ for 2027 campaign

During the Fête de l’Humanité in Brétigny-sur-Orge, Jean-Luc Mélenchon addressed supporters regarding his vision for the 2027 presidential election. A central component of his platform is the implementation of a ‘social emergency’ state. Unlike previous security or health-related states of emergency, Mélenchon describes this measure as a way to ‘guarantee the social security of individuals’ and ‘strengthen mutual aid links.’ Proposed measures include price freezes, increases to the minimum wage (Smic), and a mobile salary scale.

The proposal has drawn significant criticism from political opponents and economists. Critics, including economist Nicolas Bouzou, argue that such measures could undermine the current functioning of French liberal democracy. Other political figures have characterized the proposal as a threat to the rule of law.

Additionally, the event highlighted growing fractures within the French left. Observations at the festival noted a symbolic and practical distancing between different factions, such as La France insoumise and the Communist Party, illustrated by the refusal of some activists to participate in joint political spaces.
