French left-wing presidential campaign competition

During the Fête de l'Humanité, prominent left-wing figures Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Fabien Roussel engaged in a political duel ahead of the 2027 French presidential election. Mélenchon, leader of La France insoumise, focused on the loss of purchasing power due to inflation, which he described as ‘a theft of workers’ pay.’ He proposed a ‘social state of emergency’ involving price and margin controls, alongside a ‘citizen revolution’ to transform industry and agriculture.

Fabien Roussel, representing the French Communist Party (PCF), presented a platform focused on nationalizations and popular mobilization, aiming to position the PCF as more radical on economic and social issues than Mélenchon.

As the campaign progressed, Mélenchon further detailed his ‘social emergency’ proposal, describing it as a mechanism to ‘guarantee the social security of individuals’ and ‘strengthen mutual aid links.’ His platform includes price freezes and increases to the minimum wage (Smic). These proposals have faced criticism from economists and political opponents, with some arguing they could undermine French liberal democracy. The period also highlighted growing fractures within the French left, characterized by symbolic and practical distancing between factions such as La France insoumise and the Communist Party.
