Jean-Luc Mélenchon sees rise in early presidential election polls

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, founder of La France insoumise, is showing stronger polling numbers in early presidential election campaigns compared to his previous bids. According to studies by Ipsos bva and CESI, Mélenchon is projected to receive between 15% and 17% of the vote in the first round, placing him near or ahead of candidates from the political center and the conservative right.

While Marine Le Pen remains significantly ahead with 33% to 36%, Mélenchon’s rising support primarily impacts the competition for second place and a spot in the runoff. His strongest support comes from voters under 25, reaching 41% in certain scenarios, particularly in university cities and among those in precarious employment. His position is bolstered by a fragmented opposition across the left and the Macron-aligned camp.

In a recent lecture at HEC Paris, Mélenchon discussed his economic and social visions. His proposals included controversial measures such as banning the sale of cotton jeans to attempt to revitalize the French textile industry, a move critics argue could harm purchasing power and focus on outdated industrial models.
