Jean-Michel Basquiat honored with new mural and art exhibition

New tributes and exhibitions are highlighting the artistic legacy of Neo-Expressionist painter Jean-Michel Basquiat. In Manhattan, a large-scale outdoor mural by artist Owen Dippie has been unveiled at the corner of Bowery and Great Jones Street. The 60-foot-tall mural, based on a portrait by Gianfranco Gorgoni, stands near the site where Basquiat previously lived and worked.

Simultaneously, the Princeton University Art Museum has launched an exhibition titled ‘Basquiat, the Blue Ribbon Paintings, and the Art of Reproduction.’ The show examines how the artist integrated printmaking techniques into his paintings, specifically focusing on 11 works from 1984. The exhibition explores his use of reproductive technologies, including Xerox works and silkscreens, to incorporate motifs such as anatomical drawings and logos into his complex compositions.
